We’ve received some important information from the Hertfordshire Association of Cricket Officials (HACO) regarding umpiring and scoring opportunities, and we’d like to share it with you. Whether you’re a player, coach, or supporter, there are some great ways to get involved and contribute to the game we all love!

A Big Thank You to Our Umpires and Scorers

Firstly, HACO extends a huge thank you to all umpires and scorers who have supported our local clubs, including those who have officiated on Saturdays, Sundays, and midweek games. Last season, HACO’s Appointments Officer, Anthony Levy, worked hard to fill over 47 weekly appointments, up from 43.5 in 2023, which has been a great achievement.

However, as many of you know, our local leagues rely heavily on Club Umpires and Players to officiate in the lower divisions, so HACO is urging all clubs to help attract more qualified umpires and scorers. This isn’t just about the league – there are many opportunities in schools, age group cricket, and friendly matches.

Why Umpiring and Scoring?

Umpiring and scoring are crucial to the smooth running of matches and can be just as rewarding as playing. With recruitment being an ongoing challenge, it’s important we all play our part in ensuring the future of the game. Whether you're looking for a new challenge or simply want to contribute more to the sport, becoming an umpire or scorer is a fantastic way to get involved.

In particular, HACO is looking to increase the diversity of officials, welcoming younger people, women, and those from ethnic community backgrounds. There’s a special focus on expanding the pool of female umpires and scorers, especially with the new 4 Division Women’s League launching in Hertfordshire in 2025.
